About Megan

I received my first horse when I was 11, that would be Teage (Amberwyn Vip Pepper), who was a hot 14.2 hand, 6 yr old Morgan. October of that year Morgan #2 came along ‘Walkin Easy Star Jet’. He was 8, in the 14 yrs he was with me, he taught me a lot. We also had many arguments and wonderful times out on the trail. Jet was the first horse that I owned who didn’t really need “grain”. Now please remember this was before feeds became really processed, and I bought mine straight from the mill for many years. He survived on about a pint of straight oats, sweet feed sent him over the edge.

By the time I was 15 we had 6 horses, the 2 Morgans, 1 Tennessee Walker Mare (Stock’s Lucky Lady), 1 Arabian (Par Cresent Blu),  Lady and Cresent’s daughter, Star (Lady’s Lucky Star), and Casper who was a cremello 1/2 TWH, 1/4 Quarter Horse, 1/4 Saddlebred. I was completely hooked. We did tons of trail rides, pleasure and judged. I became hooked on dressage, and competed in open shows as well as going to a couple of A-rated Morgan shows. I thought I knew a lot about horses. Boy was I wrong!

I met Lynne Shpak, of Statesman Farm, and her two boys, The Statesman and Chief of State. She taught me more in one lesson than I had learned in the previous 5 yrs of having horses. She taught me the beginning of “horse whispering”. You do not have a mannerly horse unless they have been “Shpaked”. Lynne taught me a lot about feed, and that horses don’t really need it. Also what sugar will do to a horse. Did I listen? No, not really. It took me another 4 yrs to get it, and then it was still only half way.  When I brought Guy home in May 1993, he had been living at Lynne’s for training, he lived the Insulin Resistant diet, no one realized how much he needed to stay on that diet. I know I certainly didn’t, especially if you get married, have a daughter and a full time job, so that you can’t ride as much as you should.

Guy foundered in April 2003, (he was 13!) the prognosis, “Cushingnoid”, get him off of grass, feed only hay, and NO GRAIN!! Ok so by this time I have had horses almost 20 yrs, how can you feed a horse without giving them grain or grass? I found the Yahoo! Cushings Group in August 2003 and started learning. Through trial and error, a couple of more founders, as his dinner wasn’t balanced correctly, I finally have it right! YEAH!! Guy has been sound and happy again since the spring of 2007.

My daughter Taylor is 9 (going on 30), and I have been married since 1995 to Richard, a “Wisconsin Cheese Head”. We have 2 dogs, Josh the 14 yr old Chow Chow, and Lady the 4yr old, ‘mixed up mutt” Border Collie cross.  Both are rescue cases, Josh came from Northern Virginia Chow Rescue, along with Max (passed away in 2007). Lady was the Junkyard dog, and didn’t really have a home until I could catch her, now she is a couch potato. We live in Frederick, MD, but Guy and Teage live in Lovettsville, Virginia at my mom’s house.
