Some horses are just fussy eaters and getting them to eat their mineral/vitamin supplements can be quite a challenge.
After much trial & error I discovered that my horses really dislike artificial flavorings. So, I turned to herbal powders and natural flavorings to entice my picky eaters to eat those important supplements. However, horses like people, are different and their tastes can be quite varied. Sometimes finding your horse's preferences can be very frustrating and costly. This is why I came up with the variety packs. I used the Study Ranks Horses' Favorite Flavors as a basis for my flavoring choices.

Some helpful tips:

· Horses, especially those fussy eaters, get bored with the same thing every day. So, once you determine your horse's likes you may want to stock several flavors and change the flavorings frequently.

· The first time you offer a new flavoring, mix it with a very small amount (a cup or so) of your feed. This way if your horse refuses the new flavoring you are not wasting a full meal with vitamins, minerals, etc. Also I have found that some horses prefer the flavoring just sprinkled over the top of their food rather than mixed in.

For variety consider cut and dried herbs for your horse. My horses love dried herbs, my seasonal blends or just plain chamomile, meadowsweet, marshmallow root and peppermint. Peppermint, by the way, inhibits iron absorption so if your hay is high in iron, consider feeding peppermint frequently.
